Work Satisfaction
Now you may feel that you dislike your job and fantasise about quitting. However, I would first remind you that you are there for a reason!
Think back to when you started to do the type of work that you do and when you chose to work for your current employer. Presumably at that time it seemed attractive to you for you to make the decision to pursue this type of work or at least accept a job that was offered to you. What attracted you to it? In truth, many people have accepted a role delighted by the earning prospects with little thought as to how this would involve spending their time every day.
What I would like you to think about — honestly — is why the employer and the job originally appealed to you and why you are still there. You do have a choice — you could leave but if so far you haven’t then that’s because there is something about it that is working for you. For example, the pay might be good or at least this might be the only way that you can currently see of maintaining a standard of living that is acceptable to you.
It might be that you really enjoy the company of the people that you work with. It might be that your place of work is very convenient for where you live, or that the hours suit you for your childcare arrangements. A frank assessment of the pros and cons of your current situation may be all it takes for you to feel positive about your choice and determine that you want to find a way of enjoying it without over-committing to it.
Sapphire Coaching will help you to:
- Recognise the benefits of your current situation and assess whether you need to make some changes to make it more acceptable to you or whether it is time to move on.
- Identify what changes are necessary to make your work more enjoyable and then implement them
- Accept that you are there for a reason (see above) and let go of any resentment. Choose to do the best that you can during the hours that you are there.
- Learn how to avoid procrastination.
- Find easy ways to tackle difficult tasks.
- Be friendly with the people that you work with — even the difficult ones!
- Ensure that your working environment is pleasant. Have some personal items around you, such as photos or a small vase of flowers. Make sure that it is somewhere that you want to be.
- Look for ways to develop yourself. Many employers are willing to fund you doing courses outside of the workplace if you can demonstrate how this will help you to do your job more effectively. Learning new ideas and skills will help to keep your mind fresh.
- If you feel your job is no longer challenging you, look for ways to develop it.
Remember your values. Take responsibility for your work and doing the best job. Maintain your integrity. Do you feel proud of yourself and your work? This will help you to be committed to doing the best you can during your working day which in itself will provide more satisfaction.
